It seems as though that the best conversations come from people who don’t just simply listen to you talk on and on about what you’re passionate about, but the people who show their genuine interest by asking you questions.

It’s a good feeling. It shows that not only are they listening, but they are taking the time to get to know you.

People expect this when it comes to romantic relationships and friendships, but one place where this is needed more than ever is in our relationships with our colleagues.

Since we all came out of our pandemic holes, we’ve found a sense of humility in understanding that we all go through very real things outside of work and that we should value those things more often.

As a leader, simply showing up, making sure your team does their jobs and then going home will leave them feeling that you don’t really care.

I have to be honest, it’s something that I’ve even had to work on, but now it has become second nature. It’s always interesting to see how people respond when you go further than the standard run of the mill, “How are you?” with the ensuing “Good!”

If you really want to lead your teams and build trust with them, ask the deeper questions that will lead to connection.

Maybe start your next team meeting with a few of these.

Here’s 8 of my favorite questions to start a conversation or meeting:

1. What’s Your Superpower

Ask your team members about a unique skill or talent they possess outside of their job description.

This question encourages them to share personal passions and creates a more well-rounded understanding of each individual.

2. Tell Me About a Time You Overcame Doubt:

This question invites employees to reflect on their resilience and past challenges, fostering a sense of vulnerability and growth in the conversation.

3. If You Could Design a Work Project of Your Dreams, What Would It Be?

Allow employees to envision and discuss their ideal project. This demonstrates that you value their creativity and interests beyond their current responsibilities.

4. What's a Skill You'd Like to Learn or Improve?

Show your commitment to their professional development by inquiring about areas they want to grow in. This can also help align their aspirations with company goals.

5. Share a Personal Ritual That Helps You Stay Balanced

Inquire about personal habits that contribute to their well-being. This question shows you care about their holistic health and work-life balance.

6. Describe a Situation Where You Felt Your Creativity Was Unleashed

This question helps you tap into their creative thinking and problem-solving abilities, showcasing their potential beyond routine tasks.

7. What's a Non-Work-Related Achievement You're Proud Of?

Learn about their accomplishments outside of the office, whether it's a hobby, volunteering, or personal goal.

This humanizes the employee and builds a stronger connection.

8. Describe a Mentor or Role Model Who Shaped Your Career

By asking about influential figures, you gain insight into their values and the qualities they admire, which can guide your leadership approach.

Asking these questions at first may come as a surprise to your team, especially if you’ve never had that relationships with them before.

The more that you do this every time and use their responses to tailor how you lead them, they will begin to expect and appreciate it.

Until next time,
