Every great leader has an enemy.
I know what you’re thinking.
“Pierre, isn’t having an enemy directly paradoxical to what the goal of excellent leadership is all about?”
Yes.
When I talk about having an enemy, I don’t mean having a team member that you despise. Quite the opposite.
In simple terms, having an enemy is being extremely clear on what you are in favor of and what you are up against.
Think about all the great superheroes. They couldn’t be who they are without their main enemy.
Batman → Joker
Superman → Lex Luthor
Thor → Loki
Captain America → Red Skull
You get the idea. Knowing your ‘enemy’ defines who you are as a leader. It tells the people you lead two very distinct things:
This is what I believe in and am highly in favor of.
This is what I disagree with and will do everything in my power to be/do the opposite.
You quietly see this everywhere in the real world. In politics, in marketing, arguments, you name it.
I just believe that as leaders we are called to use it to our advantage and lead our teams to brighter places.
Here’s my process for defining my ‘enemy’.
Question Assumptions
Start by asking yourself these three questions. Really ask yourself, nothing may come up at first, but after some time spent in reflection, answers will come to the surface.
It’s important to not ask anyone outside of yourself these questions. This is between you and you.
What Do I Take for Granted?: Reflect on commonly accepted leadership practices or beliefs that you've never questioned.
What Has Become Routine?: Identify aspects of your leadership style that have become routine or stagnant.
Where Have I Been Resistant?: Think about areas where you've been resistant to change or new ideas.
Develop your ‘enemy statements’
Say that something that has become routine is “ believing that your team doesn’t need your support.”
You want to develop a statement for this specific belief.
False Belief: My team doesn’t need my support
Enemy: The assumption of self-sufficiency
Enemy statement: “I Recognize that my team thrives with my guidance and support.”
False Belief: I Should Make All Decisions Alone
Enemy: The Fallacy of Solitary Decision-Making
Enemy Statement: “Harnessing the Collective Wisdom of My Team leads to informed choices.”
False Belief: Feedback Is a Sign of Weakness
Enemy: The Misconception of Feedback as Vulnerability
Enemy Statement: I Understand That Feedback Fuels Growth and Drives Improvement.
False Belief: Change Disrupts Stability
Enemy: The Illusion of Status Quo as Security
Enemy Statement: “I Acknowledge That Change Fuels Innovation and Paves the Path to Greater Resilience."
By having these statements you’re able to specifically define what your enemy looks like and how it manifests in your leadership.
When you do this and make it known, your team will know where you stand and it becomes a catalyst for growth.
Through this counterintuitive approach, you'll not only become a better leader but also inspire those around you to strive for excellence.
Until next time,
