TMT #037: What Warren Buffet Taught Me About Leadership
The World-Class Leader
READ TIME: 3 minutes
Have a friend who needs this weekly newsletter? I challenge you to send THIS link to one person this week so we can keep growing this community! It is always appreciated.
As a leader, I am always looking for inspiration and insight from others who have found success in their respective fields. One quote that has stuck with me over the years comes from the legendary investor Warren Buffet, who said, "Someone's sitting in shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago."
This quote holds several key lessons that I believe are essential for any leader who wants to build for the long-term.Unfortunately, not every leader puts these lessons into practice and fails to think of the bigger picture and only focuses on success in the micro. We must remove ourselves from this way of operating. In this newsletter, I am going to dive into each lesson and equip you with an action item to apply in your life. After you’re done reading, shoot me a message here, I’d love to start a healthy discussion.
It's bigger than just us.
We are all part of something much larger than ourselves. Every decision we make, every action we take, has an impact not only on our own lives but on the lives of those around us and on future generations. As leaders, we must keep this big-picture perspective in mind and strive to make decisions that benefit everyone, not just ourselves or our immediate circle.
Action itemTake time to reflect on how your decisions and actions impact others. Consider the long-term consequences of your choices, and make sure they align with your values and vision for the future.
Take the narrow path.
In a world that often rewards short-term gains and quick fixes, it can be tempting to take the easy way out. But as Buffet's quote suggests, true success and lasting impact come from taking the narrow path, from doing the hard work and making the tough choices that pay off in the long run. This requires discipline, patience, and a willingness to stick to your principles, even when it's not the popular choice.
Action itemIdentify an area in your work or personal life where you've been taking the easy way out, and commit to doing things differently. Seek out mentors or role models who have taken the narrow path and learn from their experiences
Good decisions pay dividends
Every decision we make has consequences, both good and bad. But as Buffet's quote implies, good decisions have a compounding effect over time. When we plant the seeds of success through smart, thoughtful decision-making, we can reap the rewards for years, even decades, to come. This is true whether we're investing in our personal lives, our businesses, or our communities.
Action itemIdentify one decision you made in the past that has had a positive impact on your life or work. Reflect on the factors that contributed to that success, and think about how you can apply those lessons to future decisions.
What you do echoes.
Finally, Buffet's quote reminds us that what we do today has a ripple effect that extends far beyond our own lives. Whether we're planting trees, investing in our communities, or building strong relationships, our actions have the power to echo through the years, shaping the world for generations to come. As leaders, it's our responsibility to think not just about the immediate impact of our actions but about the legacy we want to leave behind.
Action itemConsider what kind of legacy you want to leave behind, both in your personal and professional life. Make a plan for how you can take action today to build towards that legacy.
A powerful reminder
Warren Buffet's quote serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of building for the long-term. As leaders, we must keep the big picture in mind, take the narrow path, make good decisions, and always think about the echoes of our actions. By doing so, we can create a better world for ourselves, our communities, and future generations. If this helped you, let me know, I can always see your replies coming through here and would love to start a healthy discussion.Until next time, Pierre Inspires
