I used to think that working longer, later hours meant that I would be more productive. I was wrong. Let me be the one to tell you that working longer and later than everyone else isn’t the key to getting more done. They key is rest. And a lot of people don’t prioritize it because society has tricked us into this dirty, hustle culture. It’s time to ditch that. Here’s how relaxation and rest impacts you, your life and your teams.

Don't let your job define you.

It's true that a job is what you do for money, but it shouldn't be the only thing that gives you meaning in life. We all need to feel like we're contributing to something greater than ourselves, and work can certainly help with this—but it's not the only way. If your job is all you have going on, then it may take up too much of your time and energy.A healthy balance between work, play and personal life can lead to greater overall happiness—and isn't having a happy life what we all want anyway?

Relaxation = Self Care

“To go the distance,” it’s essential that leaders indulge in self-care and make time to de-stress so they can bring their most capable self to their team. Find out what activities bring you relaxation. For me, it’s disconnecting and getting outside for a long walk to get right with all of the thoughts in my head. Make it a routine.

Self-Care = Increased Mental Health

I have found that having a morning routine that consists of some kind of physical activity is extremely helpful. Even if it is only twenty minutes, starting your day with something physical can set you up to be very productive. Based on your schedule, if mornings won’t work, consider right after work.

Self-Care + Increased Mental Health = Increased Physical Health

When I am in a good place mentally and am doing the necessary things to take care of myself, I am also more inclined to workout and take care of my physical health. Not to mention, studies show that people who experience less stress and manage it well are more physically fit as well.

Better Health + Better Work/Life Balance = Increased Happiness

With less stress, ailments, and boundaries around work, leaders are happier and display more positive emotions.

I hope that this newsletter this week has inspired you to take a step back and consider how your current work/life balance could be improved. Until next time, Pierre Inspires
