TMT #027: Your best trait: Radical Responsibility
Two Minute Tuesday
READ TIME: 5 minutes
Happy Tuesday!
Have a friend who needs these Two Minute Tuesdays? I challenge you to send THIS link to one person this week so we can keep growing this community! It is always appreciated.
A lot of people will open this email, see I’m talking about a topic like responsibility, and then close it.
Why? Because we hate to see the lack inside of ourselves.
You’re not that person. I know you’re here because you want to get better not only as a leader but as an individual too.
Taking responsibility as a leader can be a tricky thing to navigate. But let me tell you, it's worth it. When you take ownership of your actions and those of your team, you'll be surprised at how quickly trust, respect, and inspiration grow within your team.
Unfortunately, not everyone is so quick to take responsibility, but you can be different. As a leader, it's essential to show that you're not afraid to take ownership and make things right.
So, let's work on that together, and see how it can positively impact your team and your own leadership journey.
The key is Radical Responsibility
When it comes to being a leader, it’s not about finding someone to pin the blame on.
As leaders, we are called to take ownership of our circumstances regardless of whose ‘fault’ it is and lead our teams to achieve the best possible outcomes.
Sure, there are circumstances that are out of our control, but as leaders, our dispositions are not to control the actions of others but to take responsibility for our actions and the actions of our team.
Here’s how to do it:
Acknowledge that you are the creator of all of your life experiences.
Acknowledge that your intentions are seen in what you do, not in what you say.
Stop resisting and get curious.
It’s not your fault, but it is your job.
When you put radical responsibility into action, you unlock a world of possibilities where you can create a positive culture of teamwork, collaboration, and mentorship.
Just like how younger kids look up to older kids, your employees look up to you.
Ask yourself the hard questions.
Questions & reflection from the deepest places of curiosity and wonder are extremely powerful.
What I want you to do next is get real with yourself. Bust out a piece of paper and a pen and ask yourself these following questions:
What are the external factors that I am blaming for my challenges, and how can I take more ownership of my response to those challenges?
What are the areas where I am currently not leading by example and how can I model the behavior I expect from my team?
Now, do the opposite.
Congrats, you’ve just written your own prescription to break the cycle.
Here’s what to do next:
The opposite of everything you wrote above. You’ve identified what’s ailing you and write out the ways to get out of it. Now, apply it.
Awareness is the first step.
I’m glad you made it here. Thanks for taking this time for you.
Until next time, Pierre Inspires
