Ego in leadership?

That doesn’t even sound right unless you’re adding ā€˜is not’ in between ego and leadership.

Hear me out. I agree that a negative ego doesn’t serve anyone in leadership, but I do believe that self-awareness of your ego in leadership is everything.

The problem with a negative ego is that it prevents us from being able to learn, grow, and improve.

ā€œLeadership is not about ego, it’s about vision.ā€

The best leaders are humble, not arrogant.

For me, this statement spoke volumes because I had always thought leadership was about ego—your own or other people's—and that the best leaders were those who were the most aggressive and ambitious.

Work on your strengths, but be aware of your weaknesses.

While we are often told to work on our strengths, anyone in a leadership position should also be aware of their weaknesses.

The knowledge will help them lead more effectively and become better people as well.

Ego: The Barrier to Effective Leadership

If you have too much ego, it can lead to arrogance and overconfidence—two things that are not good for leaders because they make you lose touch with reality.

As leaders, it's essential to acknowledge this and take proactive steps to curb our egos, but also be aware of their place in what we do.

There are opposing forces in effect at all times.

Action Item: Take time to write down 5 weaknesses that you want to work on. Important — Ask other people for feedback.

True Leadership: Serving and Empowering

Leadership isn't about being right or proving yourself right all the time; it's about serving others.

It's important to remember that leadership isn't just about you; it's about building a team that can function successfully without you.

Creating this kind of culture will help your employees feel more engaged, loyal, and productive as they work toward achieving their goals together as a team.

Action Item: Create an environment of trust and mutual respect to align everybody on the same page and create interest and action around a common vision. Willingness and intention are everything.

In the end, leadership isn’t about proving that you are right all the time.

It’s about serving others and being willing to learn from them.

If you can manage that, then your ego won’t get in the way of your ability to lead others toward success.

I hope this helped. See you at the next one.

Until next time,

Pierre Inspires
