From Micromanager to High Leverage Leader: A Transformational Journey

In the realm of leadership, picture a basketball coach who, in the early days, did everything.

They picked plays, they dictated every move on the court, and they believed that micromanagement was the path to success.

I was that coach.

However, like most valuable life lessons, my transformation as a leader came through self-discovery.

I realized that true success lies in empowering others and building a support system. I acknowledged that I couldn't do it all alone.

This transformation didn't happen overnight, but it was the key to unlocking the true potential of my team.

In essence, it's about transitioning from being a micromanager to becoming a high leverage leader.

This journey is not only about personal growth but also about empowering those around you.

Here are three tactics to help you transition from being a micromanager to a high leverage leader.

Reed Hastings: A Beacon of Transformation

Netflix's CEO, Reed Hastings, is a prime example of a leader who underwent a remarkable transformation.

He evolved from being a subpar leader to setting the standard for effective management.

The core of his philosophy is built on the idea that employees should have as much autonomy as possible. Hastings strives to eliminate controls, allowing his team to act in the company's best interest without a lengthy and complicated approval process.

The question is: How can we, as aspiring high leverage leaders, achieve similar results?

Tactic 1: Empower and Delegate

The first tactic for becoming a high leverage leader is to empower and delegate. Give your team members autonomy and trust them to make decisions that are in the best interest of the organization.

While it might be tempting to control every aspect of a project, real growth and innovation occur when your team feels empowered to take the lead.

Action Item: Start by identifying areas where you can delegate responsibilities to team members.

Trust their abilities and provide guidance when needed. Encourage them to take the lead on projects and make decisions within their expertise.

Tactic 2: Encourage Professional Growth

The second tactic centers around encouraging the professional growth of your team members. Acknowledge that you don't have to be the expert in every aspect of your team's work.

Instead, focus on fostering an environment where your team can develop their skills and expertise.

Action Item: Have regular one-on-one discussions with your team members to understand their career goals and aspirations.

Provide opportunities for skill development, whether through training, mentorship, or project assignments. Create a clear path for advancement within your organization.

Tactic 3: Foster a Culture of Trust

Building a culture of trust is the third essential tactic in the transformation from micromanager to high leverage leader.

Trust is the foundation of any successful team. When your team members trust you and each other, collaboration and innovation thrive.

Action Item: Take steps to build trust within your team. Be transparent in your communications, admit your mistakes when necessary, and encourage open dialogue.

Lead by example by trusting your team members to make decisions and by providing a supportive, non-blaming environment.

The path to high leverage leadership is challenging, but the rewards are immeasurable.
