It’s a new year so it’s time to shake things up. Today I’m going to teach you how to effectively to just that when building your teams in 2023 and beyond. Get ready to ruffle some feathers.

As we emerge from the pandemic, it's clear that many of our traditional ways of working have been forever changed. The last year has been a challenging and often tumultuous time for many organizations and their employees, and it's left many of us feeling burnt out and disconnected from our work.

As we look to rebuild and recover, it's important to consider new approaches that can help us create a more sustainable and resilient future.

One approach that has gained a lot of attention in recent years is "flipping the org chart" - a management approach that empowers employees to take ownership of their work and make decisions that impact their roles and teams.

Unfortunately, many leaders don't do this because it puts them at the bottom of the totem pole. I’m going to show you how to effectively disrupt the status quo and build better teams by flipping the org chart.

Flipping the org chart

In traditional leadership, the decisions makers sit at the top with miles of distance between them and their teams.

Everything trickles downwards while the frontline workers work to build up the ranks at the top.

You see, with this approach, everyone stays where they are at and management becomes the driving force over true leadership.

If we look at where leadership is heading, this is what an org chart should really look like.

As leaders, it is our job to create teams that can drive outcomes and succeed, and this requires building a culture that is not afraid of failure and where individuals feel confident and capable in their abilities.

I’m sure you’ve heard the phrase “get out of your own way” before, but what we really need to do as leaders is “hire great people and get out of their way.”

We need to build them up to be confident in making decisons that serve the greater good of the organization. When a team member of mine approaches me with a question, it’s not about me provideing the right answer, it’s about me helping them realize the right answer with my help.

You see, alot of leaders are great at hiring great talent, but miss the mark when it comes to empowering their teams to do the good work.

Here’s some common reasons why:

  • Lack of trust

  • Inadequate training and support

  • Inability to let go of control

  • Lack of buy-in from other stakeholders

With proper training, support and leadership, you can overcome any of this and build a team worth bragging about.

Here’s 3 easy action items to do exactly that.

Step 1: Communicate the vision

People support what they create. Plain and simple.

Your team needs to understand where they fit in the vision of that and the role that they play.

Clearly communicate the vision with your team and make decisions that align with that.

Step 2: Delegate decison-making authority

What so many leaders fail to realize is that they were appointed to lead, not to dictate.

Being the supreme decision maker is actually going to limit the capability of what your team can do. Relinquish some of that power and empower others to make decisions too.

When you give people the power to make decisions, it enables them to own what they are doing knowing that you trust them to make the right call.

Step 3: Foster a culture of continuous learning

People are going to naturally make mistakes. It’s apart of the process. The goal shouldn’t be to not to make mistakes, but to create a culture that invites learning and whatever comes with it.

This is how you will grow stronger as a team.

When you encourage your teams to ask questions, learn from their mistakes and seek feedback you will build a culture that will stand out from and outperform the rest.

It’s how you build teams that not only win, but stand in their power and lean on one eachtoher to get the best out of one another.

I hope this helped. Now go out there and make it happen!Until next time, Pierre Inspires
