TMT #024: Take Back Your New Year's resolutions
Two Minute Tuesday
READ TIME: 6 minutes
Happy Tuesday!

2023 is right around the corner, and it's time to open up that journal, fire off some new year's resolutions, and slam that book shut until New Years's 2023!
Right?
Here’s the truth. 43% of us will give up on our new year's resolutions before February. Here are some reasons why you may be hitting a speed bump when it comes to your goals:
You haven't reflected on where you're at
You don't talk about what you don't want.
You set big, hairy goals that scare you away.
You don't revisit the goals that you've set for yourself.
It doesn't have to be this way if you're tired of grinding your gears tirelessly on goal setting.
Today I will explain how to set goals the right way in 5 simple steps using the 'R-Method.' Here's how:
Step 1: Reflect
Many people make a mistake in setting goals by taking a shot in the dark.
You can't go anywhere without understanding where you've been and where you are.
Action Item: Take time to reflect on the year you've had by starting here
How did I empower people this year?
How did I show up for myself?
Which character trait did I develop most this year?
What significant milestone did I complete this year?
What energy drainers currently exist in my life?
Step 2: Release
Now, what you've probably done in the past after reflecting is go straight into setting goals.
Knowing what we don't want is just as important as knowing what we want. A lot of development coaches will tell you not to even think about the things you don't want.
I disagree.
Serial Solopreneur, Justin Welsh calls them "Anti-Goals," and they work.
Action Item: Write the things you want less of heading into 2023.
Phrase it by saying, "I choose to cut X out of my life in 2023."
Make a choice. Make it boldly.
Step 3: Replace Realistically
The famous artist Michelangelo said this about goal-setting.
"The great danger for most of us lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short, but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark."
Stop selling yourself short.
Action Item: Set scary but realistic goals in these five areas of life.
Limit yourself to 2 goals per life area & do so by making "I choose to accomplish" statements.
Health
Career
Family & Friendships
Finances
Self-Development
Don't sell yourself short.
Step 4: Refine & Reverse Engineer
Setting big goals can be scary, especially if you've never done it.
Psychologically, we are much more likely to accomplish a goal if we have broken it down into multiple, bite-sized pieces.
Action Item: Get specific on your goals & break them down into yearly, quarterly, monthly, and weekly chunks.
You will thank yourself a year, quarter, month, and week from now.
Step 5: Revisit
If you consistently keep your goals front of mind, there's no way you can lose.
None of the other steps matter if you don't take the time to consistently revisit your goals every week and readjust based on your progress. I set aside 45 minutes to an hour every Sunday to do this like clockwork.
Action Item: How to revisit the right way.
Reflect on the week.
Remind yourself of the things you don't want to do.
Set goals attached to the next phase of your monthly goal.
Break it down into task-based items.
Plan out your week.
Each week is like a collapsed version of the whole year.Hope that helps! Here's to a successful and productive 2023.Until next time, Pierre Inspires
