Leaders should be spending 50% of their time building culture.
It's not just about creating a great work environment - it's also about fostering strong relationships with your team and helping everyone achieve their goals.
But let's face it, building culture can be tough. It's easy to get caught up in day-to-day tasks and overlook this critical aspect of your role.
Plus, it can be hard to know exactly how much time you should be spending on it.
Lucky for you, you don’t hav to make the same mistakes I did.
We’re going to explore how much time leaders should be dedicating to building culture, and share some practical tips for doing so effectively.
These are the same strategies I used to create a workplace that's welcoming, inclusive, and productive.
Where leaders are getting it all wrong
One common misconception that leaders have about building culture is that it's a time-consuming process that takes away from other important tasks.
As a result, many leaders prioritize other responsibilities over culture-building, or delegate the task to HR or other team members. Unfortunately, this approach can lead to a lack of buy-in from employees and a weak organizational culture that fails to achieve its goals.
Research has consistently shown that strong cultures lead to better employee retention, productivity, and financial performance.
Take this study by Deloitte that found organizations with strong cultures had a 72% higher employee retention rate than those without.
Examples like Tony Hsieh of Zappos and Howard Schultz of Starbucks demonstrate that it's possible for leaders to build a strong culture while also managing other responsibilities.
Both leaders prioritized culture-building and made it a core part of their organizations' success.
So rather than simply writing off culture building because it’s not a direct money-generator or you don’t have time for it, take this advice instead.
The Key to Building a Strong Culture.
Remember earlier when I said that leaders should be spending 50% of their time building culture?
It might sound crazy, but I meant it.
There’s no amount of time that you can spend on spreadsheets or crunching numbers that will lead to positive team morale. The honest truth is that you have to get out there on the frontlines and listen to your teams.
There’s never been a position that I’ve had where the teams I’ve visited weren’t pleasantly surprised that I took the time to come listen, talk with them and give them recognition.
Time is the most valuable resource that we have and we can’t get it back. When you spend it with your teams, they will understand where your values lie and know that they are appreciated.
Overcoming challenges in building culture
I’m no stranger to the challenges of building culture either but I will tell you that it is a million times more worth the effort than the fallout of not doing it.
Good things take time and usually the more friction you face, the closer you are to breaking way on building the culture.
What’s important it being prepared for any challenges that you may face so you can handle them intentionally.
Here’s a few you may have already came across:
Resistance to change
Conflicting values
Lack of buy-in from employees
Lack of resources
Maintaining momentum
To overcome these challenges like these, involve your teams in the culture-building process. Seek their feedback and input to ensure that everyone's voice is heard.
One last thought
Building culture is not just about creating a great work environment, but also about fostering relationships with your team and helping everyone achieve their goals.
Spend at least 50% of their time building culture, and involve their teams in the process by seeking feedback and input.
If you’re spending zero, start with with 20%, but just start somewhere.
Thanks for reading, I hope this helped!Until next time, Pierre Inspires
