TMT #029: Build A Team That's Worth Leading

Two Minute Tuesday

READ TIME: 4 minutes

Happy Tuesday!

One of the most common questions I get about leadership is:

“How can I build a winning team that listens to me?”

And most leaders have got it all wrong. Starting with this question.

The idea that we need to build teams that will simply listen to us and do the hard work while we sit back and the delegate is far from the reality of leadership.

As leaders, we can sometimes get so attached to our title that it blinds us from what we should really be focusing on.

And that’s people.

Your team isn’t winning because of a technical mistake. Your team isn’t winning because of a ‘people’ mistake.

There will always be ebbs and flows, but when you build a team the right way, they become far fewer in between, and your team is resilient through turbulence.

So today, I’m going to share what unsuccessful teams look like and how to build better teams that are worth leading.

Characteristics of an unsuccessful team

There’s only one ‘leader.’

A successful team with 100 members has 100 leaders.” - Lance Secretan

Having a single leader can limit diverse perspectives, stifle creativity, and lead to a lack of ownership among team members. All of which are extremely important and critical.

Innovation and progress should be paramount. When you designate multiple leaders, a team needs to have a diverse range of voices and perspectives to drive progress and find creative solutions.

That is especially true if you are in a rapidly advancing industry.

Start here, and you’ll understand why the next three are so important.

Lack of Team Bond

This, to me, is the really big one.

If your team has no chemistry, the willingness to work together and create will die.

Trust and communication will break down, and work will suffer because of it.

A strong team bond is essential for a high-performing and cohesive team, and leaders must prioritize building this bond if they want to succeed.

Nobody is Taking Risks

Complacency is a silent killer that affects all of us, and it starts at the top.

A team that plays it safe and sticks to the status quo will not be able to keep up in a rapidly changing industry.

Taking calculated risks can foster a sense of excitement and creativity among team members, leading to more innovative and successful outcomes.

I find it essential for staying ahead in the game and finding new and creative solutions to the challenges that arise.

Ask yourself, “What healthy challenges could our team take on that we’ve been avoiding?”

Lack of Feedback Loop

Human brains thrive on stimulation. If you're no longer learning and growing from your work, that’s a big red flag.

One of the most fulfilling aspects of working for yourself is the many opportunities to learn new skills and grow as a person.

If that’s not happening, it can be extremely unfulfilling.

And unfulfilling work leads to an unfulfilling life.

Teams want leaders that are going to constructively criticize them in ways that will make them better.

How to Build Better Teams

When your team falls under any of the characteristics that have been provided, it may be time to reevaluate the project.

This can be a difficult and disappointing moment, but it's important to remember that there is always a next step.

The next steps you take are crucial to your rebound, and your team's success moving forward.

Firstly, take a break.

Give yourself and your team the time to unwind and recharge. This break will allow you to reflect on what you have learned from the project and make a note of those lessons.

If you can apply these lessons to your next move, all was not lost. It's important to not head into a new project feeling exhausted and beaten up, so take the time you need to recharge.

Once you're all feeling refreshed, it's time to reassess your goals.

This break will help you to gain clarity and perspective.

Ask yourself, "What type of life do I want to build, and what sort of projects fit into that lifestyle?"

Be honest with yourself and consider what type of projects will give you energy and align with the lifestyle that you want.

Think about the reasons why the current project may have failed.

Was it due to a lack of resources or time?

Was it because the project didn't align with your team's goals or strengths?

Last Thing

By taking an honest look at what went wrong, you can ensure that these mistakes aren't repeated in future projects.

Consider seeking out new opportunities or approaching existing projects with a fresh perspective.

Maybe it's time to shift focus or try something completely new.

The key is to be open to new ideas and approaches and to focus on projects that align with your team's goals and strengths.

With these steps in mind, you'll be well on your way to success in your next project.Until next time, Pierre Inspires
