In todayâs 2-minute Tuesday, I want to talk about something that people donât talk about nearly enough. Iâm going to talk about salary negotiation & why itâs important. Touchy subject right? đ This has been the elephant in the room for a lot of people and honestly guys, itâs time to speak up when communicating with our higher-ups and even with our colleagues. Pay transparency should be something that is a given. You want to be rewarded for your hard work, right? So do I. The problem is how do you get what you deserve when that's not what they're offering? It's important to know that you should NEVER accept the first offer. Negotiating your pay should be mandatoryI know it can feel scary, but if you equip yourself with the necessary tools to do so, it can feel empowering to speak up for what you deserve. Here are three quick steps on how to negotiate your salary into the salary you deserve.
1.Do your Research.
Take the time to read your job description and compare it against what the salaries are for similar jobs in the market. Understand what the going rate is for your position. Use online resources like Salary.com or Payscale.comBeing equipped with knowledge before going into a meeting with your boss and prepared to show them why you believe you deserve a raise based on your market research. 2. Keep track of your wins If youâve been in your current position for some time and are ready to negotiate for a raise, a great starting point would be to document and take note of all the areas where you have made your team or company a better place. Focus on tangible outcomes that youâve achieved. When itâs time to negotiate, share this with your boss. The truth is that while they may think highly of you, itâs impossible for a boss to keep track of everyoneâs wins. This will not only impress them that you went the extra mile but also remind them of your value. 3. Come from a place of calmThe first thing a lot of people want to do when negotiating their salary makes demand for what they think they deserve. âI think I deserve to be making x and if you donât pay me that I am going to look elsewhere.â With this approach, your boss will feel threatened and defensive. Instead, try using this approach.âRight now, I am maxing X. Based on my performance of these metrics, what the fair pay for someone in my position is, and the goals that I set up for myself, Iâm really hoping to be on a track to Y in the next 12 months. What are some areas you would recommend I focus on to hit my goal number?âThis completely changes the conversation for your boss and more times than not they will be willing to give you advice that you asked them for. There is no a one-size-fits-all approachWith so many factors that play into salary negotiation, this is not an exhaustive approach to pay negotiation. Here are some other things to keep in mind while considering negotiating your salary. đ Have other optionsđ Inquire about stock optionsđ Upskill & keep learning đ Share & contextualize your unique storyđ Be transparent about how you feel đ Ask for date from your employerI hope this helps as you take your next step to getting what you deserve!Until next time, Pierre Inspires
