Last week we talked about the problem with problem solving. Today, this newsletter is about how to be the creator versus being the problem solver. To put it plainly, focusing on solving problems doesn’t actually solve them. Here’s what happens when we problem solve.

The problem exists and we feel the pressure. So we do something to alleviate the pressure of the problem and it get’s better.

What do most people do when the problems intensity is no longer felt? They relax. Why? Because you will always follow the path of least resistence and what needs to change is the system that you are operating in. The structure of what you are operating.

So, how do you truly solve problems? You create a new system.

I love the way that Robert Fritz painted this picture in his book, “The path of least resistence.”

Imagine, for a moment a river that has water flowing through it. That water is always going to follow the path of least resistence. That path is being followed by the structure or form of the river bed.

Take the water of the river bed and the structure still exists. It doesn’t matter if you take that water out, unless you change the flow of the water by engineering a new path of the river bed, nothing changes.

And this is the exact same thing that happens in our life. We think that when we implement actions that make us feel better for a while, that they will change our situation.

What it takes is changing our structures that exist in our life and that is done not by focusing on problems, but by focusing on our structures.

The key to creating a new structure

You have to take your focus off of the problems that currently exist, but at the same time you have to be realistic about where you are at in your current situation. You can’t positively think your way into creating a new structure, it requires being real about where you are at and where you want to go.

Get real with where you are

Start with where you are.A lot of people try to trick themselves into a situation they are not in. While that may work for awhile, it isn’t sustainable.

What you have to do is sit down and reflect on the reality of where you are at in life so that you can contrast that with where you want to go.

This can be applied to your life as a whole or a specific situation where you want to create a new structure.

Action Step: Write down where you are at in life. Get real about the way things are going in work, life, relationships and more. Vision is key.Once you’ve gotten real about where you are at, it’s time to paint the picture of where you want to go. This is going to create a tension that we need to bring ourselves to our new structure.Just like in nature, we too follow the path of least resistance. Action Item: Now that you’ve defined your current state, write down where you want to go. What does your ideal life look like in contrast to what you have currently created by going with the flow. The path of least resistanceThe choice we have in life is either to go with the flow that is created for us or we create the reality that we want to exist. We are all creators, we all have the power to create. It starts by making the decision to do so.
