I remember early on in my career I was so focused on feeling like I had to prove myself to everyone who believed (and didn’t believe) in me. I walked around with a chip on my should telling myself that I have prove to everybody why I am capable of these opportunities that I’ve been given. What I was grateful to realize early was that this style of leadership simple was not going to be sustainable. I was set on being a leader that empowered others to create their own wins. So, I started to think about how I could best utilize the people around me not for my own gain, but for the the overall gain of the team and success of the individuals who were apart of it. I’m sure we’ve all felt the pain of feeling like we’ve had our power stripped away from us. So, what’s the problem with problem solving?

It’s not that there is anything innately wrong with problem solving, it’s just that a lot of us aren’t doing it right. We’re all guilty. Here’s some ways problem solving could be hurting instead of helping

  • You’re overly fixated on the problems versus creating new things that will move the team / company forward.

  • You fail to give your colleagues the opportunity to solve the problem, rendering them powerless and lacking confidence.

  • Change is only implemented until the problem is less intense.

The true way to approach problem solving is by not focusing on the actual problem itself. I’m going to break down the three points I mentioned above and give you the steps to win when it comes to problem solving.

Over fixation on the problem

If you’re spending too much time focusing your energy on looking for problems, they will come. When we spend our time overly fixated on what happened and how we will rectify the situation, we become like robots that are always on the lookout for danger which puts us in a state of constant reactivity.Action Item: Spend time writing down the things you’d like to create that have no attachment to any current problems and put a plan in place to make them happen. Give back the power.

When we always want to be the one with the solution, we take away the power from our team. What we need to do is come to them humbly and give them the opportunity to provide input & suggestions to keep moving forward. This will not only strengthen their trust in you, but it will also provide them with the confidence to trust themselves. "Give a person a fish and you will feed them for a day. Teach a person how to fish and you will feed them for a lifetime.”Action Item: Set your team up with short and long term goals then pass off the baton to them and support them along the way.

Short lived change. So, you’ve addressed your problem and things are starting to look up. Then, you get comfortable. A lot of times in problem solving we don’t let things stick. So when we find a solution, and the intensity of that problem subsides, we get comfortable and find ourselves right back where we started. The problem-solution loop is all too common for leaders to get stuck in & to get to the root of the problem requires a NEW system. Imagine if you took all the water out of a river, the river bed would still run the same way.Action Item: Take sometime to reflect on the current systems that you have in place and ‘re-route’ your river bed. In summaryFocus on the problems and you’ll have more of them. Focus on systems and team empowerment and you’ll have endless wins. I hope this TMT served you & I’ll see you on the next one! Until next time, continue being World-Class.Pierre Inspires
